Make Art Every Day
As an artist, you have the opportunity of making and keeping the most fun resolution ever—making art! This year, try making a resolution to make something every week—if not every day. Here are a few specific ideas to get you started.
Take a photo every day. This is an especially good idea for those who find themselves unable to really go out there and take a bunch of pictures at a time. Should you still schedule such a photo shoot? Absolutely. But until you can do that, one cool picture of the snail on your doorstep or you kid just waking up or your neighbor reaching for the newspaper in his underwear will suffice.
Take part in a challenge. Don’t you just love art challenge? If you Google them, you can find them all over the web. (You can also find some here.) Take part in one, or better yet, make your own: get a few artist friends together, write down ten prompts each, and take turns posting them on a collaborative blog or get together and make something once a week.
Use a new medium every week. Pastels, watercolors, chalk, crayons, food, found art, metal…
which have you used? Resolve to try something new often in 2010. Even if you hate felt or velvet paintings (I’ve always hated them!), why not just try it out for the heck of it?
Get into origami, kiragami, papier mache… The possibilities are endless! My daughter and I had a blast with the origami calendar we purchased for 2009, which had a piece of origami paper with directions for every day of the year. If nothing else, hit YouTube for ideas; you can find a tutorial for making just about anything.
Do an art program, such as something by Julia Cameron. These are always incredibly insightful and have always made my output increase like crazy. Start with The Artist’s Way if you haven’t done that one already.
Make an art journal and put clippings, collages, paintings and tidbits in it every day. If that’s just too free form for you, grab one of Kerri Smith’s amazing books like Wreck This Journal or This is Not a Book or Jill Badonsky’s The Awe-Manac. You’re guaranteed to have new projects to do daily!
Be a kid. Whatever your child is doing at school, do it with him or her at home. Better yet, search the web for projects—say, “Valentine crafts”—and find a few to do together.
Make your own cards throughout the year for various occasions.
