As an artist, I’m constantly strapped for time to create anything new—which always makes me feel like my creativity is just dwindling faster and faster as the weeks pass me by. Where I once took the time every day to work on my morning pages, drawing prompts, and other creative endeavors, now I’m lucky if I scribble something in my journal once a month!
I recently found a project that I think is much more doable than the larger endeavors I’ve done in the past, and I think I’m going to give it a go. It’s from one of my favorite art blogs, Daisy Yellow, and it’s call Index Card-a-Day. Every day, there is a prompt for you to do something creative on a cheap index card—whether it’s drawing a bunch of different faces or making art out of a couple of different word prompts you’re given. What an amazing idea!
This takes the pressure off to make something “worthwhile” while still giving you that creative time you need every day. On Mother’s Day this year, I remember just wanting some time to myself, and sitting down in the morning to sketch a drawing of Storm (from the X-Men comic book series) only to be interrupted by my hungry five-year-old as my husband snored on! That picture is still unfinished, with only an outline of Ororo’s face and shoulders. Using index cards would give me a smaller space to fill on a very portable medium; I could see myself doing this while my daughter is in taekwondo, for example, or even waiting in line somewhere. I could even let her do a prompt alongside me.
If you decide to do this project, feel free to upload your results here at Artista! I’d love to have other people play along with me.
