Anish Kapoor Chosen to Build Sculpture for 2012 Olympics
London Olympics LogoWith the 2010 Olympic games barely finished, the preparation for the 2012 Olympic games in London is ongoing and seems to be hitting a more rapid pace. The London mayor announced today that a sculpture design by Anish Kapoor has just been selected to represent the 2012 London games.
The sculpture will be 115 meters tall and will stand in the Olympic Park. To give you an idea of how tall the sculpture will actually be, just consider the fact that it will be 22 meters higher than the Statue of Liberty.
The piece will be funded partially by ArcelorMittal, which is a steel company and partially by the London Development Agency and is hoped to, “encapsulate the energy and spirit of London during the Games”, which is a very tall order for the experienced artist. Anish was chosen among a huge range of artists from all over the world by the Olympic Committee.
As described by Anish Kapoor himself, the tower will “be in a twist, always off-kilter, never quite vertical”. The goal of the artist is to create an iconic tower that is in the same league as the Eiffel Tower.
To give you a better idea of what the tower will look like and how it was designed, please watch the video below.
