I don’t mean to make your mornings creative by starting each one with some writing, meditation, or doodling on your morning paper—all good things to do, by the way. I mean to join in the national movement known as Creative Mornings.
The idea is to attend a monthly talk at breakfast time with other creatives like yourself. Each event is organized with a lecture, and they are all free to the public. Coffee is also supposed to be provided, which is good for us creatives who prefer to work at night.
These lectures are not limited to artists from the United States, either. It’s a global trend, with Creative Mornings taking place everywhere from Berlin to Zurich. At each event, you might expect to meet videographers, photographers, and many other creative people who not only share an informative talk, but also record it to share with the rest of the world. Some people are referring to Creative Mornings as TED for the rest of us—though I think most people can learn something from a TED Talk, too.
Unfortunately, Creative Mornings may not be within the vicinity of every area; the nearest to me, for example, is a good seven, eight hour drive. Still, you could plan your own Creative Morning with friends, or even organize a similar one to those already being hosted. Could you imagine meeting up with other local creatives once a month to share ideas, host a talk, and simply add more beauty to the world? How awesome would that be! If it were me, I would definitely end each meeting with a guerilla art project where we all do something creative together—like leave pretty watercolor notes hanging in trees for people to find, or inspiring quotes artistically displayed across the city.
In the United States, you can meet up with current Creative Mornings in Chicago, Seattle, Portland, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. You can apply to be a speaker at any of these events via the website. North Americans can also travel to Toronto for meetings. Once you attend a meeting, you can also find more local details about events, Tumblr accounts to follow, and more creative inspiration. The Chicago Creative Mornings Twitter, for example, can be found here. You can also follow Creative Mornings via their blog or Twitter page. The blog is great, filled with artistic quotes, videos, and more inspiration.
