    As much as we love art, we have to wonder sometimes at its place in alternative therapy. Why is it used so much in helping victims of trauma or abuse?

    It turns out that art is good for our mental health. Many people who have suffered a severely painful emotional, mental, or even physical experience have a tough time conveying how they feel afterward. Some find it hard to talk at all. By allowing patients to express themselves through an art medium such as paint, crayons, or any other means, psychologists believe that patients can begin to heal as well as open up about their experiences.

    Cloud GateCloud GateJust like clothing, a building or outdoor space might be beautiful to see, but still uncomfortable. The feeling of being within the confines of that attractive, yet stifling shoe is actually a good comparison to make while moving through Millennium Park.

    Working with public spaces, the importance of accessibility and functionality play as much of a role in an entities success as its outward aesthetic. Seeing as Millennium Park was designed by a group of well renowned and highly thought of architects, the physical appearance of the structures in the park as well as its layout were assured to be pleasing to at least a segment of the population. Regardless of what the space and various objects within it look like, though, there’s the greater issue of the project’s usefulness.

  • Exhibitions: What It Do... (Part Two)

    If one displays a great deal of art in a private home and a visitor, being overwhelmed by what he or she sees, a person might find that home to be something of an exhibition. That’s not inaccurate. There’d be art on the wall for guests to see. And really, that’s basically how museums and the like function. Right?

    An art exhibit can simply exist in the mind of the individual whereas all those that surrounds him or her remain oblivious or simply uncaring. Undefined spaces can instantly become a forward thinking gallery displaying any range of visual art.

    In western culture there’s a specific notion that most expect to physically encounter when venturing off to see art. Imagining any venue that possesses untold cultural treasures tacked up on walls or encased in glass, folks would describe the scene in varying terms using words like “gallery,” “exhibit” or “display.” People’s notions concerning art and how its displayed has been engrained in them from school field trips or forced visits accompanying parents to see that one Picasso painting. And while there are only scant signs of change, change has still come to museums and galleries.
